Tole Painting tips...

Speckling:

I got the following tip from a fellow painter and thought it to be one of the best ones yet.

When speckling or splattering your piece with colour (generally white, cream, black or dark burnt umber) dip an old toothbrush in water, squeeze out excess and dip the end into your puddle of paint.  Take your thumb (or a palette knife - but that's never worked well for me) and gently rake it down your brush bristles to get the paint distributed through the brush.  Now here's the IMPORTANT part... BEFORE you speckle, apply one or two coats of varnish on your piece, let dry.  Now when you speckle and get a glob of paint in an undesired area, simply wipe off with a q-tip!! How's that for a fabulous tip!  Gone are the days of wiping off what you can, only to have to re-apply the basecoat in that area!

Thanks to Carol Ann out in California for this tip!!
